St. Andrew’s Brotherhood (Men’s Group at Holy Apostles)

We are a group of men who share Christian values and strive to grow into the likeness of Christ our Lord. We come together in fellowship and brotherhood to support one another and to grow spiritually together. We follow the Word of our Lord as expressed in sacred Tradition and through the Holy Scriptures, in the company of our most Holy Lady the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary and St. Andrew the first-called of the disciples of the Lord.

Our Mission is to come together as a group of Christian men to support one another spiritually, to help one another grow in our faith and to support and sustain our Holy Apostles community.

Why did we choose St. Andrew as our Patron Saint?

We chose St. Andrew as the patron saint of our brotherhood for two reasons.

First, we read in scripture that it was St. Andrew who was the first called and the first to accept the

Lord’s calling to discipleship. “One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother. He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, “We have found the Messiah” (which means Christ). He brought him to Jesus.” (John 1:40-42) Just as St. Andrew was ready and willing to hear and heed the Lord’s call in his life, not only that but also evwe too both as individual men and as a group also wish to emulate St. Andrew by always being ready to hear the Lord’s call and to heed that calling.

Secondly, we chose St. Andrew from the etymology of the name. Andrew has its roots in the Greek language. The word is derived from the Greek: Ἀνδρέας, Andreas, itself related to Ancient Greek: ἀνήρ/ἀνδρός aner/andros, "man", thus meaning "manly" and,

as consequence, "brave", "strong", "courageous", and "warrior". The Lord calls us to be courageous using the same word that is the name for Andrew. “Be strong and courageous (ἀνδρίζου, be andrew). Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” (Deuteronomy 31:6) As men and servants of God, we strive to be courageous and strong by placing our hope and our trust in the strength of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
